Custom Domains
Use your own domain for short links to maintain brand consistency and build trust with your audience.
Plan Requirement: Custom domains are available on the Pro plan and above. See our pricing page for details.
Overview
By default, all short links use the r.sniplink.co domain. With custom domains, you can use your own branded domain like go.yourcompany.com or links.brand.io.
Setting Up a Custom Domain
Dashboard Setup Required: Custom domain setup and verification must be done through the SnipLink dashboard. The API currently supports using custom domains but not managing them.
Step 1: Add Domain via Dashboard
- Go to the Custom Domains page in your dashboard
- Click "Add Custom Domain"
- Enter your domain (e.g., go.yourcompany.com)
- Copy the DNS records provided
Step 2: Configure DNS Records
Add the following DNS records to your domain provider:
| Type | Name | Value | Purpose |
|---|---|---|---|
CNAME | go (or your subdomain) | redirect.sniplink.co | Routes traffic to SnipLink |
TXT | _sniplink.go (or _sniplink.subdomain) | sniplink-verify=YOUR_TOKEN | Verifies domain ownership |
Note: DNS changes can take up to 48 hours to propagate, though most changes are visible within minutes.
Step 3: Verify via Dashboard
Once DNS records are configured, click "Verify Domain" in the dashboard. SnipLink will check your DNS records and verify domain ownership.
SSL/TLS Configuration
SnipLink automatically provisions and manages SSL certificates for verified custom domains using Let's Encrypt. This process:
- Happens automatically after domain verification
- Takes 1-5 minutes to complete
- Renews certificates automatically before expiration
- Supports both HTTP and HTTPS traffic (HTTP redirects to HTTPS)
Using Custom Domains via API
Once your custom domain is set up and verified in the dashboard, you can use it when creating links via the API by specifying the domainId parameter.
Get Your Domain ID
Find your domain ID in the dashboard. It will look like dom_abc123.
Creating Links with Custom Domain
Specify your custom domain when creating links:
curl -X POST https://api.sniplink.co/v1/workspaces/{workspaceId}/links \
-H "X-API-Key: snip_your_api_key_here" \
-H "Content-Type: application/json" \
-d '{
"url": "https://example.com/long-page-url",
"domainId": "dom_abc123"
}'The resulting short link will use your domain:
{
"success": true,
"data": {
"id": "lnk_xyz789",
"url": "https://example.com/long-page-url",
"shortUrl": "https://go.yourcompany.com/abc123",
"domainId": "dom_abc123"
}
}Setting a Default Domain
You can set a default domain for your workspace so you don't need to specify it each time:
curl -X PATCH https://api.sniplink.co/v1/workspaces/{workspaceId} \
-H "X-API-Key: snip_your_api_key_here" \
-H "Content-Type: application/json" \
-d '{
"defaultDomainId": "dom_abc123"
}'After setting a default domain, all new links will automatically use it unless you explicitly specify a different domainId.
Troubleshooting
Domain Verification Fails
- Check DNS propagation: Use dnschecker.org to verify your DNS records are visible globally.
- Verify TXT record format: Ensure the TXT record matches exactly what the dashboard shows, with no extra spaces.
- Wait and retry: DNS changes can take time. Wait 15-30 minutes and try again.
SSL Certificate Not Working
- Check domain verification: SSL is only provisioned after verification.
- Wait a few minutes: Certificate provisioning takes 1-5 minutes.
- Check CNAME record: The CNAME must point to
redirect.sniplink.cofor SSL to work.
Links Return 404
- Verify domain is active: Check the domain status in your dashboard.
- Check DNS configuration: Ensure CNAME is correctly configured.
- Verify the link exists: The link may have been deleted or expired.
Best Practices
Use a subdomain
Use go.domain.com or link.domain.com instead of your apex domain. This allows CNAME configuration and avoids conflicts.
Keep it short
Short domains like go.co or l.ink make links more memorable and save characters.
Brand consistency
Use a domain that reflects your brand to build trust with users clicking your links.
Monitor DNS health
Set up monitoring for your custom domain to catch DNS issues before they affect users.
